Sly & The Family Stone - Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)
1970
With Thanksgiving around the corner, I chose the funkiest possible way to say thank you.
(And the quirkiest possible way to spell “for letting me be myself again”).
This 1970 hit was instrumental in creating the signature sound of funk. For that, I also want to thank Sly & the Family Stone.
Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Twen - Fate Euphoric

I first heard Twen on their 2022 One Stop Shop record and instantly fell in love. The duo, Jane Fitzimmons and Ian Rollins Jones, have just wowed me again with their third studio album Fate Euphoric.
This brilliant title track is not the opener, but rather the closer, sealing together the album with powerful drums, infectious melodies, and pure euphoria as the title would suggest.
I can’t get enough of this song. Indie rock is so back.
SOMETHING BORROWED
Al Kooper - Toe Hold (Johnnie Taylor)
Al Kooper - Toe Hold (Johnnie Taylor)
I feel confident in saying that I was the only high schooler at my school totally and completely fixated on Al Kooper.
By the time I began hosting the Dizzy Express, the obsession had waned, and his solo music shockingly never played on the show.
I Stand Alone was the first album I ever heard where each song flowed into the next seamlessly, and that was an enormous discovery for me. The record is split between originals and covers, including this one: Toe Hold, written by Hayes & Porter and first recorded by Johnnie Taylor.
A great horn section accompanies Kooper’s take on this high-energy soul song, with loving lyrics like
So baby, if you're with me / Let the whole world be against me.
So baby, if you're with me / Let the whole world be against me.
SOMETHING... I'D LOVE TO HEAR AT THE GEESE SHOW TONIGHT (BUT IT'S OKAY IF I DON'T, I'M JUST HAPPY TO BE THERE)
Geese - 3D Country

Geese - 3D Country
2023
I’ve said it a few times here. And I’ve said it many, many more times to those who know me well: I love Geese. Tremendously.
When I discovered them earlier this year, the first song that hooked me was 3D Country. I listened to it on a loop late at night every night in my dark bedroom, and at times, couldn’t help but kneel on my bed or even get out of it and dance. There was something extremely addictive and fueling about it, and that’s not something you can ignore and move on from. It was not a fluke. I can say with certainty today that I truly love every single song they’ve ever released.
Tonight, on the final night of their US tour in their home of Brooklyn, I get to see Geese. I was fortunate enough to also see their free album release show back in September, and it was extraordinary, but no 3D Country.
They seem to be mixing up the setlist every night and while I’ve avoided looking at the setlists, I do believe I saw that they’ve played the song at least once.
Like the title (something i’d love to hear at the geese show tonight but it’s okay if i don’t i’m just happy to be there) says, I’m not going to be upset if they don’t play it!! But I might combust if they do, and I hope you will listen to this extraordinary song if you haven’t already.
